About Kiruna and the Ice Hotel

If you've ever wondered what it is like to live in a room made of ice, you're about to get your answer. The Ice Hotel in Kiruna, Sweden is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Made entirely of ice, there are a variety of warm and cold rooms and suites along with regular rooms as well. In the ice rooms, you are provided with expedition level sleeping bags and reindeer skin rugs for warmth. If sleeping in these rooms isn't quite your cup of ice-cold tea, the hotel also has day tours where you can see each of the rooms and the complex. The Ice Hotel also has new ice exhibitions every season to catch your attraction. What's more, you can avail of the icy goodness all year long, not just in winter. Fear not, the hotel also has daily tutorials in the experience of living there, you will not freeze to death. Along with the stay, the hotel also offers activities like Torne River rafting, midnight-sun tours, Northern lights viewings, snowmobile, and sled-dog tours, and so much more. How to reach

By bus:

Take bus line 501 from Kiruna Sporthallen to Jukkasjärvi Icehotel. It'll cover 18.2 km in 24 minutes and costs between 35 to 55 SEK.

Tips

  • Take the guided Northern Lights tours, where you can try ice sculpting, ice fishing, husky sleighing, moose watching or a snowmobile safari.
  • Check out the nearby Esrange Space Centre in Kiruna. It's very exciting and considered a once-in-a-lifetime visit.
  • Be sure to book your stay at the Ice Hotel up to a year in advance. It is full year-in, year-out and last-minute inquiries rarely get you a place.
  • Don't buy special gear for the trip. The hotel supplies everyone with all-in-one-overalls which are designed for the cold. They also give you boots, over-gloves to go over your gloves and balaclavas.
  • All iced bedrooms are open to the public until 6:00 p.m. every day, and then guests are allowed to retire to their chosen room. If you aren't staying at the hotel and just looking to visit, come before 6:00 p.m.
  • During the winter months, there are only a couple of hours of daylight per day. It's a better idea to visit during the summer months.
  • If you are not keen on drinking out of ice cups there are warm drinks available and soft drinks for the children, at the Ice-Bar.
