Tips

  • When you take the Mount Britton trail and get to the top (after walking up a short service road) there are two trails! The one on your right is the Mount Britton Tower Trail and the one just off to your left (not the road) is the El Yunque Peak Trail.
  • Be sure to get an updated map and visit the Temporary Palmetto Hub in Palmerro before hiking!
  • Visitor Center: The temporary visitor center (Portalito Hub) is just outside the forest. The rangers are helpful and can point out local tips. There's also good places to eat around there.
  • Drive all the way to Bano Grande Pool which is close to the maximum drivable distance. A short walk leads you to a picturesque man made pool.
  • Juan Diego Falls: A 5-6 minute easy trail leads you to these spectacular falls. Well worth the walk. There's a shallow pool where you can swim if you so wish.
  • okahu Tower: Climb up this tower for 360 degree views of the forest and the surrounding hills. There's a tiny gift shop at the base and also a place to get packaged snacks close to the tower.
  • La Coca Waterfall: These falls are right by the road as you drive down. It's a wide waterfall off a steep cliff. There is a path through the trees and rocks to the top
  • Make sure you have some food/snacks and water on you and enjoy the rainforest!
  • Don't go expecting to see parrots and frogs everywhere. The frogs are hiding from you and there are like 50 parrots in all of Puerto Rico's wild.
  • It's a *rain* forest, so be prepared to be rained on even if it was not raining by your beach hotel. Bring some plastic coverings and just enjoy it. If you don't like rain, stick to the beach.
