About Palácio da Bolsa

How would you feel about walking in the steps of royal family members and state dignitaries? Excited, right? Then make a beeline to the town of Porto, straight to the Palácio da Bolsa. Allow yourself to be carried away by the delicate and intricate work of the 19th-century artists. Also, known as the Stock Exchange Palace, it is one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Porto. Architecturally, this neoclassical edifice is a sight to behold. It was constructed by the Porto architect Joaquim da Costa Lima Júnior. The designs were inspired by English Palladian that appeared to be fashionable at the time in Porto. As soon as you enter this building, you are greeted in the courtyard by the beautiful glass-domed Pátio das Nações (Hall of Nations).

Prepare to be amazed as you move further into the palace. You will come across the Neo-Moorish style of architecture in the Salão Árabe (Arabian Hall). It is said to be inspired by the exotic Palace of Alhambra in Grenada. What makes this hall so breathtaking is that almost every nook and corner of it is decorated. The appeal of this room is that in today’s times it is used to greet the head of states and other dignitaries, grand and meticulous its a perfect location to hold such meetings. Built-in the 19th century, the palace was the center of trade for money merchants in Porto. Originally, it was the headquarters of the Porto Commercial Association, which reinforces its importance at that time. In 1841, at the request of Queen Dona Maria II, the building was used as a Stock Exchange.
