Central Portugal is brimming with one beautiful tourist destination after another. Ensure that you add one more name to your bucket list of places to see in Portugal, The Obidos Castle, a fine example of the combination of beauty and rich culture entwined in one edifice. The castle is located within the walled town of Obidos. Something out of the pages of a fairytale, the city is located along a limestone ridge and surrounded by ancient town walls on all sides. Within these formidable walls lies a beautiful castle, cobblestone streets, and some colorful houses. How can one resist the allure of this wonderful location? The town of Obidos has a very interesting story associated with its past. It was said to have been a wedding present to the Queen of Portugal. Through the years, the royal patronage has preserved the authentic charm of the town and the castle. You will instantly fall in love with this picturesque town and its many century-old legends.
Located on top of a hill in the town, the fortress has been overlooking the city since the 8th century. It was expanded and rebuilt numerous times since then. The castle that we see today was built under the reign of King Dom Dinis in the 13th century. In 1950, the castle was converted into a hotel called Pousada.
It is 84 km away from the city centre. You should catch green and yellow metro lines from Campo Grande bus station.
