Extravagant and a mammoth building, the charm of the Mosteiro Pálacio Nacional de Mafra (Monastery and National Palace of Mafra) is unparalleled. This mesmerizing 18th-century palace-monastery is situated in Mafra. It is also known as Palace of Mafra. Built between 1717 and 1755, the palace is beautifully designed and built in a Baroque and Italian Neoclassical style.
The palace-monastery was originally meant to be a simple Franciscan convent, but later it evolved into an extravagant palace. Years were spent redecorating and upgrading the structure into a palace. But, even after the palace was built, King João V and his Queen hardly ever stayed here. It was a different story with King João VI who stayed at the palace from 1806 to 1807. Due to an impending attack of the French troops, the King decided to flee to Brazil. He took all the valuables and most of the furniture with him. The palace that we see today has been refurbished with whatever that was left behind. In 1910, the edifice was honoured with the title of a National Monument.
On your visit to the palace, ensure that you check out the library. It is one of the most renowned book repositories in entire Europe. Some other rooms and halls to explore are the Throne Room, the Trophy Room, the Royal bedrooms, the Infirmary, and the Music Room among others.
