About Banaue Rice Terraces

Popularly acknowledged as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ by the Filipinos, the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao are one of the most offbeat yet utterly splendid attractions in the Philippines. Declared a National Cultural Treasure in 1973 by the Philippines government, the rice terraces are known to be over 2,000 years old. A part of the indigenous local heritage, the centuries of sheer dedication and effort to keep this tradition alive and preserve its legacy is what makes them so appealing to the outside world. Carved into the heart of the Ifugao mountain range, the perfectly manicured and meticulously levels rice terraces offer an unprecedented view of the surrounding landscape, irrespective of where you are in the area.

It is believed that the Banaue Rice Terraces were originally created to prevent the challenges of growing rice on this vertigo-inducing land. However, they soon became a part of the local lives here, so much so that even after hundreds of years, rice farming in the area is carried out pretty much in the same way as it did originally. Soaring to a height of 1500 meters above sea level, the rice terraces are best experienced by taking a trek in the area. Contrary to popular belief, the Banaue rice terraces are not a part of the UNESCO inscription Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras.

  • It is best to take a local hiker with you if you plan on trekking in the area as the trails aren’t properly marked
  • February and March and June and July are the most preferred months to visit the rice terraces
  • June is the harvest season here so visiting during the time can be highly rewarding
  • The area experiences a lot of rainfall during summers and fall and views could be clouded so make your travel plans accordingly
  • Carry proper hiking shoes if you plan on hiking and trekking in the area as the unmarked and unpolished trails can be difficult to fathom otherwise
  • A bus journey to get to Banaue takes at least eight to 10 hours so prepare yourself accordingly by wearing comfortable clothing and shoes, carrying a neck pillow, and carrying some snacks for the way
  • The buses usually make a couple of bathroom and food breaks so you do not carry a lot of edibles
  • Carry all your basic as well as essential medicines as it may be difficult to find a proper pharmacy in the area due to its remote location
  • If you are short on time, the best way to explore the area is with a local guide so you don’t miss the key places and viewpoints
  • The buses in the Philippines have air-conditioning which is usually set to a freezing temperature. Wear or carry extra layers since telling them to adjust the temperature could go in vain
