Popularly acknowledged as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ by the Filipinos, the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao are one of the most offbeat yet utterly splendid attractions in the Philippines. Declared a National Cultural Treasure in 1973 by the Philippines government, the rice terraces are known to be over 2,000 years old. A part of the indigenous local heritage, the centuries of sheer dedication and effort to keep this tradition alive and preserve its legacy is what makes them so appealing to the outside world. Carved into the heart of the Ifugao mountain range, the perfectly manicured and meticulously levels rice terraces offer an unprecedented view of the surrounding landscape, irrespective of where you are in the area.
It is believed that the Banaue Rice Terraces were originally created to prevent the challenges of growing rice on this vertigo-inducing land. However, they soon became a part of the local lives here, so much so that even after hundreds of years, rice farming in the area is carried out pretty much in the same way as it did originally. Soaring to a height of 1500 meters above sea level, the rice terraces are best experienced by taking a trek in the area. Contrary to popular belief, the Banaue rice terraces are not a part of the UNESCO inscription Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras.
