About Kuelap

The Cloud Warriors

Did they fend off the clouds? No. Instead, they lived and loved living amidst raindrops and dewdrops high on the mountain 1500 years ago. The Chachapoyas built their kingdom here, protected and sheltered till they fell to the Incas in 1470. Time and nature have reclaimed what was theirs yet remnants testify to the undying spirit and power of these mountain people. Walls have crumbled. Roofs have disappeared but you can see channels running around the perimeters of the living quarters. Guinea pigs were housed there for insulation and food. Ingenuous, isn't it? Jaguar and snake designs are engraved in the rock. You can guess why. The climb is tough and risky with steel railings to keep your balance. But you still want your time with the Chachapoyas!!

How to reach

From Lima, the best way to get to Kuelap is to fly directly to Chachapoyas. This little town is situated around 14 miles from the ruins. From Chachapoyas head over to Nuevo Tingo by private transfer. From there, a bus will take you to the departure cable car station. This is a 3 km journey and takes around ten minutes. The flight from Lima to Cajamarca airport will be 1 hour 40 minutes costing USD 100 one-way. We recommend the shorter 8-hour drive to Chachapoyas starting at USD 45. From there, buses or taxis will take you to Nuevo Tingo with one-way prices ranging from 10 to 50 SOL per person.

Tips

  • The ruins are situated on a 3000-meter tall mountain.
  • You can take the recently built Cable Car.
  • The last 40 minutes have to be hiked.
  • You could also take a horse.
  • Guides are available for better understanding.
  • The hike is best done on weekdays and non-holidays as the parking lot is small.
  • The last cable car leaves the top at 3.45 p.m. so an early start is better.
  • The area where the cable car stops have bathrooms, a small restaurant, and a museum.
  • Carry food, water, and suitable hiking shoes.
  • Windcheaters and caps are essential carry-along items too.
