About Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary in Ayacucho, Peru is the main cathedral of Baroque architecture. Located in the Plaza de Armas (city center of Ayacucho), it was declared as the historical and cultural heritage of the nation of Peru in 1972. The construction of the cathedral began in 1632 and ended in 1672 with a pink stone in the center and grey stone in the towers. It is also considered as one of the most beautiful Cathedrals in Peru for its magnificent interiors decorated in Churrigueresque style.

Known as the primary and most significant temple in Ayacucho, the cathedral has four opening (doors) of arches with one on the north side and the three in the main façade. The main façade has a central portal bound by double Corinthian posts resting on rectangular columns for finishing the four areas. At the intervals of these columns lies two statues of the apostles' St. Paul and St. Peter. The procession on Cathedral of the Risen Christ starts at dawn on Easter Sunday except for the holy week. The cathedral building has two posterior towers, of which the northern part is made out of brick and lime and the southern part is made out of stone. Out of the three arches, two lay on the lateral sides and one on the significant side.

Also known as the Cathedral of Ayacucho, it carries three naves and chapiters built-in hewn stone having a beautiful domed octagonal, triangular base, and some 16 high vaults. The night view of the cathedral, especially during the Holy weeks is incredible ease to eyes.
