Known for glacier-carved fiords of Doubtful and Milford sounds, the national park was established in 1952. Waterfalls tumbling hundreds of feet, snow-capped mountains and glittering lakes are sure to enthral the tourists of all age groups. The park is spread over 1.2 million hectares and the variety of habitats support a diverse range of flora and fauna. You can find plants and animals unique to this area. The park is committed to preserving unique and endangered wildlife and its Takahe Recovery Programme is a part of this. On the whole, experience heaven on earth with mountain peaks, glimmering fiords, icy lakes and rivers winding its way through the native forest. The Te Wahipounamu in the South-West has lent the park an international World Heritage status. The park is a photography enthusiast’s haven.
