About Lake Rotorua

The second largest lake by surface area in New Zealand’s North Island, Lake Rotorua lies in a volcanic caldera formed by volcanic activity. The lake is bounded by Rotorua city, opulent farmland, natural bush, and sweltering geothermal springs and vents. Mokoia Island is situated in the center of the lake. This corn shaped island is now a wildlife sanctuary and is home to endangered species of native birds and a hub of unusual flora-fauna.

Lake Rotorua is well known for trout fishing and is a favorite fishing spot for both natives and tourists alike. The volcanic activity in the Rotorua attracts visitors year round. Rotorua's geothermal features like spouting geysers, bubbling mud pools, and colorful sinter terraces are worth watching. Facilities for kayaking, paddling, and river cruise are available. The lakefront reserve has children’s play area, picnic tables, BBQs, and areas for family gatherings. Craft markets, pony rides, and concerts are also conducted here. Adjacent to the lakefront reserve, you can see Sulphur Point where you can see the rainbow of colors in the Sulphur flats.

A visit to Kuirau Park situated close to the lake will be interesting to people of all ages. This geothermal wonderland has several features such as hot pools, mud pools, and public foot pools. Redwood forest, government gardens, mountain bike trails, forest walks, and local markets nearby are worth mentioning. Lake Rotorua is one of the most mind blowing places to visit when you are in the Rotorua town.
