About Lake Taupo and Tongariro National Park North Island

Located in North Island, this is the oldest national park in New Zealand. Its Maori culture and spiritual significance have resulted in the park getting acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Also known as the land of legend, this park is home to 3 active volcanoes – Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Explore the park’s beauty and diversity with our range of activities suitable for all ages, interests and abilities.

Regarded as the world’s best one-day hikes, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing offers phenomenal volcanic scenery and beautiful views of Lake Taupo and Mt. Tarankai. An outdoor person? Check out some of the overnight hikes; 4-day Northern Circuit or the 6-day Round the Mountain Track. For the less adventure-friendly, there are a series of short nature walks where you can explore a wide range of flora and fauna.  The short walks are also an opportunity for you to experience the dramatic waterfalls; Taranaki Falls, Silica Rapids and more.
