Here is a fine example of how man and nature have come together to overcome hurdles and maintain civilization for over 1000 years. It warrants a visit simply based on this fact. If not, then you can come here to have your picture clicked at one of the most popular locations to click photographs in Holland! The Netherlands is below sea-level, and the Windmills of Kinderdijk have been instrumental in keeping civilization “afloat” in its surrounding areas, for over a millennium.
Built-in 1740, the windmills have ever since been standing guard over the plains of Kinderdijk. In short, the lands are drained with the help of complicated hydraulics’ system, that enables the Dutch to easily farm and settle in water-prone areas. This ingenious system of keeping the land dry is why the Windmills of Kinderdijk received the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997! A network of 19 windmills forms a part of a bigger water management system that prevents the area from going underwater. A very popular tourist attraction, the Windmills of Kinderdijk have two museums, where you must watch the movie played in the Wisboomgemaal Visitors’ Center. Also, do visit the windmill workshop, in the Molenwerkplaats, where guides explain how the windmills function and are preserved.
One can travel to Kinderdijk from the city via a waterbus which begins from a terminal near Erasmus Bridge. At Riderkerk terminal, catch another waterbus that sails directly to Kinderdijk. The whole journey takes around 35 minutes and the total cost will be around 9.30 EUR per person.
