A sleepy, almost-abandoned town in the western region of Myanmar, Mrauk-U was the capital of the most powerful Rakhine kingdom from 1430 to 1785. It wasn’t until the first Anglo-Burmese War that the British relocated the regional trading center to Sittwe and the town that once bustled with life and lavishness fell to its decline. Once a melting pot for traders from all parts of the world, this unassuming town is now home to hundreds of prehistoric pagodas, temples, and monuments that reflect the architecture and grandeur of the Arakan kings who ruled and nourished this town for over two centuries.
An offbeat travel destination away from the maddening crowd of Yangon and Bagan, the Mrauk-U archaeological zone is now dotted with remnants of the area’s glorified past. Though there isn’t much left of the Royal Palace, the ruins and the Archaeology Museum is a must-visit, especially if you are interested in the town’s history. The temples here are divided into four categories, namely northern, southern, eastern, and western. While several monuments still lie buried under soil and vegetation, Mrauk-U still has numerous places for you to discover for days. Apart from its glorified past, the town also offers a spectacular landscape. Tucked between River Kaladan and River Lemro, the town nestles amidst the Rakhine Yoma mountain range.
Sittwe is the closest town to Mrauk-U at 65.6 kilometers. From Sittwe, there are ferries that take 4 to 6 hours and costs around 27,950 MMK
