About Taung Kalat

Located at the top of a volcanic plug which has an altitude of 737 feet above sea level, Taung Kalat is one of the most famous Buddhist monasteries in the Mandalay region of Myanmar. The mesmerizingly gorgeous temple complex can be seen from the bottom of the hill as the top part of the temple is gold-plated. For anyone trying to reach to the top of the temple, they will have to climb around 777 stairs. But the journey is not quite easy as the entire route is crowded with monkeys. While climbing up the stairs, tourists could get to see a vast number of shrines and souvenir shops on the way.

Locally Taung Kalat is known as Mount Popa. The volcanic hill on which the temple stands out is now extinct, but in the earlier days, it was pretty active. U Khandi is one of the most famous hermits in Myanmar who maintained the staircase of this temple complex until he died in 1940. Right now, this unique monastery is known to be the home to 37 Nats or spirits. Tourists visiting Taung Kalat, get to see the statues of the 37 souls in the human form while climbing up the stairs. Usually, people visit this temple complex from Bagan. Apart from Nat shrine, there are different stupas present in the temple complex as well. People from all around the world visit the shrine not only because of their spiritual beliefs but also because of the gorgeous beauty that can be viewed from the top of the temple.
