About Sultan Mahmud Airport

'Sultan Mahmud Airport' is located in 'Kuala Nerus', a Malaysian district, in the 'Terengganu State'. This Airport lies only 6 meters above sea level and is only 8 kilometres away from the nearest city; that is 'Kuala Terengganu'. It was named after 'Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah', commonly known as 'Mahmud of Terengganu'. Mahmud was the 16th Sultan of Terengganu. The airport primarily operates local flights but sometimes does offer room for international departures and arrivals.

The Sultan Mahmud Airport is just at the coastline of Kuala Terengganu, and neighbours the 'South China Sea'. In 2008, Kuala Terengganu city was given the status of 'City', which made it the state capital of the Terengganu State. As part of planning infrastructure development of the city, the Malaysian Government allocated 200 million Malaysian Ringgits to build a new terminal at the airport, and also extending the runway. The runway of this airport now lies at a short distance into the South China Sea as it cuts through the local beach. The old terminal was completely torn-down, before building the new terminal at the exact same site. The runway was built in order to receive and accommodate the Boeing 747 planes, which now arrive from 'Kuala Lampur' on a regular basis.

The airport has a unique architectural design utilizing local architectural skills and style. The use of cream-coloured stone while decorating the airport is what makes it look quite different from the regular airport, which uses the typical steel and glass buildings. There are certain beautiful features that exist inside the airport. There is a viewing gallery located in the departure area where you can enjoy a wide view of the runway and you might even catch the sight of some aircraft landing or taking-off. There is also a lovely pond located in the departure area.

The Airport is currently owned by the 'Government of Malaysia' and is operated by the 'Malaysia Airports Berhad'. It is a different looking but a beautiful airport, attracting 943,660 passengers and 11,485 aircraft in 2017 alone.
