The National Textile Museum is near Independence Square and next to the Sultan Abdul Samad building. It is housed in a very beautiful Mughal style building. The entrance is free and the museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The nearest MRT station is Masjid Jamek. A visit to this museum is recommended as it gives a fascinating insight into the diverse range of textiles in Malaysian society.
The Pohon Budi Gallery shows the history of the textiles. The Pelangi gallery shows batik material and is quite colorful. The Teluk Belantaio Gallery shows the Malaysian songket and how the designs and patterns are made. The Ratna Sari gallery shows jewelry items.
This beautiful old building in the Mughal-Islamic style, on the edge of Medea Square, now houses the National Textile Museum. The wide collection not only provides examples of many Malaysian ethnic textiles but also shows the wide variety of these ethnic groups within Malaysia. It’s a pity the cafe and gift shop seems to be permanently closed, but more of a pity is that there are very few who visit this museum.
