About Penang Hill

Located in the Air Itam suburb, Penang Hill is an ideal location for tourists to enjoy while on their trip to Malaysia, it is more commonly known by its Malay name Butik Bendera. This beautiful hill resort encompasses a number of gorgeous peaks on Penang Island making it a popular tourist attraction. The first colonial hill station developed in Peninsular Malaysia, on a clear day the view from the top of the hill is simply mesmerizing. The easiest and possibly the most popular way to the top of the hill is via the Penang Hill Railway. This Swiss-designed funicular is the oldest system of its kind in the world it is located at the base of the hill and stretches for a whopping 2007 meters along the hill, however, the beautiful hilltop has an alternative route which can be reached by road but this is reserved for the hillside residents. For those who enjoy hiking, you can sign up for an 8 km hike up the beautiful hillside. There are numerous stops along the way where you can rest and stock up on your energy. At the end of the funicular station, there are numerous places to eat at, buy souvenirs or just explore nature and the views. This luxurious and delightful site is tailor-made for family vacations creating everlasting memories.

Tips

  • The Best view is from the stairs to the restaurant above the Sky Terrace.
  • Pay for the fast ticket - you skip the queues which were very, very long for the ride up and down.
  • You can walk up / down but that is said to take at least 2 hours in significant heat. You would need to be pretty fit.
  • Don't sign up for any tour packages to this location. It's very easy to come here on your own and walk around the hilltop.
  • Go there during weekdays to avoid the crowd.
  • Go there to escape the City heat as it’s abt 5 degrees cooler up there & the awesome view.
  • Cash and credit are accepted.
  • Children must be accompanied at all times.
