About Kek Lok Si Temple

A trip to Malaysia would be incomplete without visiting some of their famous mystical, foreign and divine temples. This list includes the name Kek Lok Si Temple sprawling over a large campus, this Buddhist temple is a crucial pilgrimage centre for Buddhists from the Southeast Asian countries. Strategically located on a hilltop at Air Itam, near Penang Hill, the temple is divided into three zones. On the ground level are the turtle liberation pond, hill entrance, and stalls for souvenirs and snacks. Higher up is where the gardens, the pagoda, temples, and the four heavenly kings pavilion is located. On the third level, there are more temples and gardens as well as a huge statue of the Goddess of Mercy. The temple is surrounded by a lush green forest and at night lit up in the auspicious colours of red and gold it stands out on the horizon beckoning worshipers and visitors towards it.

How to reach

It is 358km away from the city center.

You can reach there by Bus.

Depending on where you’re coming from, take the Rapid Penang Bus 201, 203, 204, 206, 306 or U502. You will be able to see the Kuan Yin statue from afar. Stop at the bus stop located along Jalan Pasar, at the foothills of the temple. From there, follow the signs leading to the temple.

Tips

  • You can combine the visit to this temple with the cable car in Penang Hill. But be aware that it can take you up to two hours to go up and down the hill due to the long line!
  • If you are staying for at least two days in Georgetown, take a morning or afternoon to visit this amazing Buddhist temple.
  • Inside Rama VI temple, there is a staircase that leads you to the top where you can take wonderful panorama pictures over the temples.
  • If you plan to come after 7 PM, think again, maybe you only can arrive at the temple by 9 PM due to heavy traffic jam.
  • Tourist, despite the temple, doesn't have strict regulation about the dress code, please dress properly to show your respect the holy temple. Avoid all type of very-short pants, miniskirt, tank-top, crop-top.
  • Visit here before or after visiting Penang Hill as they are near to each other.
  • If you go with your parents, you can start from uphill (local people said, 'station 3') So, you start from uphill (Guan Yin big statue) and after that, you can go downstairs by a lift inside.
