The Guia Lighthouse built in the 17th-century and located on the Guia fortress is the first colonial-style lighthouse on the Chinese coast and the highest spot in Macau. It was completed and opened on September 24, 1865. The 91-metre high lighthouse was built on the fortress, and is the first modern lighthouse on the coast of China and has a small chapel close to it. The lighthouse was damaged due to the storm in September 1874 before it was reopened and rebuilt on June 29,1910. The great building that houses the Guia Lighthouse can be seen from over 20 miles away with its bright colours and designs is also recognized as an important part of Macau's colonial history and culture, which led UNESCO to name it a World Heritage Site.
The cylindrically-designed building is divided into three floors of 5 metres each, has a gyroscopic ladder connected to the vertical space, and a giant spotlight set on the top of the tower. The chapel on the side of the lighthouse is popular and is referred to as the Snow Temple of Our Lady of Notre Dame Snow Temple with thick walls on both sides and pillars to support the roof of the tube-arch structure. The temple has a sacrificial clothing room on the right side of the main altar, with the choir on the upper level of the very narrow door. Regarded as the chapel where the Virgin Mary rose above the church and used her robes to protect the Macanese from Dutch attacks in 1622, it also has a picture of John The Baptist in it.
The design of the church facade is relatively simple, with triangular mountain flowers on both sides of the pillar, and the entrance gate is also designed in the same way. The ceilings and walls in the church are painted with beautiful colour murals, and their painting is of a combined Chinese and Western art to highlight the value of the church. Visitors can enjoy an amazing view of the city of Macau, the sea-side and the environment is also very good for children. You can also climb to the top of the lighthouse- though this will cost a little extra cash, as also walk through the parkland with beautiful its views. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity, the serene environment of the Guia lighthouse brings.
