About Cliffs of Moher

Over one million visitors per year can’t be wrong. The Cliffs of Moher are over 300 million years old and are part of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark. You may already have seen them in the Harry Potter movies or as the Cliffs of Insanity in Princess Bride.

This is just one of the stops on the Wild Atlantic Way tourist trail, 18 km from Hag’s Head to Doolin. The shale and sandstone cliffs that are 200 meters high were created by sediment, silt, and clay collected in the marine basin. The cliffs are said to record history itself in varying thicknesses over the millennia. Fossils from worm trails, invertebrates, and marine life are present in its layers.

From the visitor’s center, you can take one of two paths to go on your own adventure to the edge. See the Branaunmore below O’Brien’s Tower and the sea arches at Hag’s Head. Once part of the cliffs, the rocks have eroded and separated from the mainland. Playful puffins, grey seals, and porpoises may photobomb your vacation pictures. This UNESCO World Heritage Site will be a stunning stop on any vacation to Ireland. Just beware of falling rocks.
