The Powerscourt House does not get its name from its powerful military importance. Its original owner in the 13th century held the title of Baron La Poer. This was eventually changed to “Power.” The title is itself interesting because while other titles are inherited La Poer was a title by writ.
In the 16th century, the house was owned by the Viscounts of Powerscourt. Two hundred years later the house was remodeled into a large country estate. In the 1830s the house was used for prophetic conferences or Bible prophecies. In 1857 the house was again renovated and the gardens were created. It was sold to the Slazenger family who has strong family ties with the Viscounts.
Two rooms on the ground floor of the Powerscourt House are open to the public. Get a glimpse into what life was like to the homeowners. The real attraction is the gardens surrounding it. You may be inspired by the Japanese Gardens, the Dolphin Pond, the Italian Garden, Triton Lake, and Tower Valley. Reminiscent of Versaille, Schönbrunn, and Schwetzingen, the gardens took 20 years to finish.
