Have you ever worn an intricately-knit sweater known as Aran? It has its origins in the Aran Islands of Ireland. These islands are Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer, and constitute the Barony of Aran in County Galway. They are only about 46 square kilometers (18 square miles) in total area, but they pack a special vacation punch.
Inishmore is best known for its ancient fort, Dun Aengus or Dún Aonghasa. It is one of many Bronze and Iron Age forts including the Black Fort and the “newer” O’Brien’s Castle built in the 14th century. Visit the Clochán na Carraige, Teampall a Cheathrair Álainn, and the Teampull Bheanáin, the world’s smallest church. It’s a little different from other churches as it is built north to south, instead of the traditional east to west.
From a natural pool known as the Worm Hole to the ruins of various churches, there is plenty to see and do. Get a real Irish experience. Stay in one of the many comfortable and friendly bed-and-breakfast venues, or have an entirely different kind of vacation by going glamping.
This authentic Irish feel, totally devoid of modern trappings is truly miraculous and to be savored.
