The Rock of Cashel is a fortress in the County Tipperary. The Rock is also referred to as Cashel of the Kings as also St. Patrick’s Rock. It is a splendid complex built in the 10th century with buildings in use since the 12th and 13th centuries. For centuries the Rock of Cashel was the home of the Munster Kings.
Fans of Celtic art and medieval architecture will feel right at home behind the tall stone walls and towers. One of the oldest is a round tower 28 meters (90 feet) tall. The chapel and cathedral feature arches and vaulted ceilings. Cormac’s Chapel is unique in Ireland, as it has two towers on either side of the nave in a Germanic influence. It also houses one of the best-preserved frescoes from its time. Why the Anglican Archbishop of Cashel, Arthur Prince, had the cathedral roof removed in 1749 still remains a mystery.
The fortress, on the whole, evokes its own sort of mystery. Local legend states that the Rock of Cashel came from the Devil’s Bit when St. Patrick banished Satan from a cave. The Rock landed in Cashel atop the hill where the fortress was then built.
