Almost every major city has a central square that is the pulse of the town. Often, there is immense history and art associated with these squares. Akin to this, the city of Thessaloniki boasts of the Aristotelous Square.
It is almost impossible to keep a straight face while walking along this gigantic and impressive Square. The first thing to catch your eye is its huge monumental mansions. If you can peel your eye away from them, you will find yourself getting mesmerized by the view of the Thermaikos Gulf. Yet another interesting aspect is that on a clear day, from the Square you may even be able to view the Olympus massif in the far distance.
This main city square comprises of twelve impressive buildings. They were the brainchild of French architect Ernest Hébrard. Most of the central square was constructed in the 1950s, while the surrounding structures have since then been renovated and restored. Since the 1950s, all the 12 buildings have been enlisted as Hellenic Republic buildings.
What has become extremely popular among the tourists and locals alike is its “U-shaped” cluster of streets. There is a beautiful clock made of flowers here that is much loved by all. Also, there is a huge statue of Aristotle in the Square which is a favorite among students. Mainly, because of rumors that if they touch Aristotle’s toe then apparently, they will get wiser and clear their exams successfully. No harm in trying, right?
