About Meteora Monastries

How does one explain the beautiful geographical phenomenon of nature? It can only be experienced in person. No amount of words or pictures can do justice to the grandeur and ravishing sights of the world-renowned Metéora in Greece. For millions of years, the solid rocks of Metéora have been weathered by water and wind and split by earthquakes to form the most beautiful natural phenomenon where man often goes in search of solitude and enlightenment.

Originally, the summits of the rocks were home to 24 monasteries. However, in today’s time, only 6 of them are left to be admired and explored by all. It is said that the first hermits arrived here in search of peace and spiritual solitude, thus building the first monastic communities. Gradually, more monasteries were constructed with greater artistic and architectural value.

These rock formations are home to six Eastern Orthodox monasteries and numerous hermitages. Is it any wonder that both believers and non-believers alike flock here from all across the globe?
