What’s so special about a bridge? The Pont du Gard near Vers-Pont-du-Gard in France is an ancient Roman aqueduct built to cross the Gardon River. It is the highest, and one of the best-preserved, elevated Roman aqueducts in the world. It has three tiers of arches and stands 160 feet high. The Pont du Gard is a marvel of Roman engineering. We might come close to modern technology, but that, of course, wasn’t available in the 4th century.
As an aqueduct, it carried almost 9 million imperial gallons of water per day to the homes and baths in Nîmes. But wait, there’s more! It was also a toll bridge. The rich were allowed to tax levies on travelers who wanted to use it to cross the river. Over the last three hundred years, the Pont du Gard has seen some renovations, with the recent addition of a visitor center. Be inspired to write a song or poem, or sit along the banks and be inspired to take up painting.
