Le Mont-Saint-Michel, or Saint Michael’s Mount, is a beautiful 17-acre island off France’s northwestern coast. Home to a monastery since the 8th century, it once held a strategic place in the country’s history. It was easily defensible from all sides of the water. A boat is not required for a visit to Mont St-Michel. Park your car, take one of the special shuttle buses or hop onto a horse-drawn carriage to get over the causeway.
Go on a pilgrimage of your own to the Benedictine Abbey. The medieval architecture of the abbey church, the cloisters, and the refectory will be sure to amaze you. Visit an honest-to-goodness knight’s house built in the 14th century, where his wife foretold the futures of their guests. Be mesmerized by the lights and magic at the Archéoscope. Feel free to wander one or all of the museums to discover medieval weapons and torture instruments, inventions, and naval replicas. One of France's most recognizable landmarks, you’ll be able to say you’ve been there.
