Planning an invasion of the Citadel at Carcassonne? It would be a futile effort since the citadel has a 1.9-mile double wall with 53 towers, a moat, and barbicans. Known to locals in the region as “La Cité” it is a living medieval theme-park set on top of a hill.
The Medieval military architecture will make you want to pick up a sword. You’ll only need a set of armor to feel like you were there fighting eons ago. Top off your visit with a stop in at one of the restaurants, for typical French fare and pastries. Stroll along the winding cobblestone streets. Enter the Basilica of St. Nazaire and St. Calise, and imagine what service would have looked like there on any given Sunday. Even though some might say once you’ve seen stained glass, you’ve seen them all, that’s not true here. The only enemy of the Citadel it seems has been time.
