When traveling the Loire Valley to take in the over 300 châteaus, be sure to stop in at the Château Royal de Blois. The building of the château spans four centuries, and is a mix of styles from each: Medieval, Renaissance, Gothic, and Classical. Surround yourself in architectural beauty. Peek inside the “Salle des Étas Géneraux” built in the 13th century, one of the oldest seigniorial rooms in France, and the largest civilian Gothic room. It looks more like the inside of a small cathedral with its vaulted ceilings than a private room. You can imagine the official meetings and plotting that would have taken within its walls.
Like something out of a Harry Potter movie, the “Chambre des Secrets” has many built-in compartments where Catherine de’ Medici was rumored to stash her poisons. One of the best-known features of the château is the external winding stone staircase with its Italian-style bas-relief sculptures. Step where Joan of Arc was blessed by the Archbishop before driving off the English in 1429. Château Royal de Blois is like a living time machine, covering the reigns of four kings. Go in, and be transported.
