A remarkable feat in world history and architecture, this is one of the few mortuary temples in the world that was commissioned by and made for the female ruler. Queen Hatshepsut was the longest-ruling female Pharoah of Egypt during ancient times. The temple is vast and is covered with symbols and scenes from her plentiful reign, including obelisks, carvings, sphinxes, and shrines. Structurally, the temple has three symmetrical levels and outer collonades as well. The temple has seen some damage over the years by competing rulers who wanted to end the rule of a woman, but as of today, UNESCO's efforts have successfully conserved a lot of the site.
