Denmark sure holds a lot of first and oldest titles among Europe. Over 800 years old, Hammershus is the largest castle ruin and fortification in the North of Europe. When in the castle, you will have the chance to explore its rich history of construction, conquest, loss and redemption while being a point of defence for Bornholm. Once the castle was abandoned in 1743, villagers were invited to gather materials from the castle and its grounds. After this, the castle ruins were declared officially in the National Historic Register. Now, you can walk through the entire site. You can also see panoramic views from the castle Visitors’ Centre and see the castle during the different time periods of its existence. You can also hike through the terrain that ends at the ruins. There is a treasure hunt organised around the ruins which helps explore it fully and learn about it in the most engaging manner. The harbour below the ruins also offers some great dining options after the visit.
