About Sedlec Ossuary

A small gothic church in the suburbs of Sedlac city, this place will quite literally take your breath away on the inside. This is because this Ossuary is decorated with over 40000 human skeletons! Welcoming you into the complex is a large chandelier of human bones, and this chandelier contains at least one of each bone in the human body. You will also see the coat of arms of the Schwarzenberg family, again made out of, you guessed it, human bones. The story to this church is that in 1278, the abbot of the Sedlec monastery came back to Sedlec with a jar of soil from the Holy Land, Jerusalem and spread it around a local cemetery. Immediately, people flooded him with requests to be buried there after death. These burials were later exhumed during city expansion and thus was born this macabre decoration for the chapel. There are also various garlands made of human skulls. While this chapel is definitely not for the faint of heart, it is recommended to muster up the courage and observe how such a grotesque setup still functions perfectly as a place of worship for so many.
