About Karlstejn Castle

Erected in 1348, nothing about this Gothic castle is ordinary. The castle was built initially to house and display the royal treasury and crown jewels. Over the years though, it has served a variety of functions. The castle is a specimen in design the world over, due to its stepped structure and layout, based on the importance of each of its elements. The bottom of the castle is the settlement outside the castle walls. Above this, you see the Imperial Palace with its rooms for the king, over which lay the Kings' court. This was topped by the Marian tower chappel, and at the highest point of the castle is the Great Tower, which keeps the Czech treasures safe from roving eyes. Spend time studying the intricate glass panels in the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and drink water from the hand-operated well on the grounds as well. There are different tours offered to visitors that cover a shorter and longer route, so choose accordingly. After seeing the castle up close, also go over to one of the restaurants or bars overlooking the castle and perch yourself at the patio. The view of the castle in all its grandeur is rather unmissable.
