Old is gold
This age-old adage finds its literal illustration in an ancient church that is the wealthiest in Cyprus. Adorned in gold with exquisite murals, this monastery dates back to 1081 A.D. It is dedicated to the Virgin and houses the icon attributed to Apostle Luke. The silver-gilt icon is kept in a shrine made of tortoiseshell and mother of pearl and is a symbol of eternal faith and reverence. Stunning mosaics illustrate Biblical history as well as the narrative of the church. Treasures from the Medieval and Ottoman are carefully preserved in the museum. The church lies nestled high up in the mountains with beautiful backdrops and stunning scenery. Photography is not allowed in the chapel. Emperor Alexios's daughter was healed by the Cypriot hermit Isaiah who claimed the icon as his reward. What is rewarding to the tourist is a fascinating marvel of history, where old is gold, its glimmer reflected from the gold lanterns gracefully suspended in the hallowed hall of a consecrated place of worship.
