An Archer and Founder
Son of Telamon of Salamis, it was Teucer, the ace archer, who founded this ancient city. Ruled by the Persians, the Phoenicians, the Ptolemeous, the Romans and the Byzantines, this was an important trade port for a thousand years. Afterward, it was abandoned by its inhabitants who moved to Famagusta in 647 AD. But the wind whispers among its ruins and its walls have stories to tell. Many of the excavated artifacts now belong to the British Museum. The public buildings excavated date back to the post-classical period. Particularly impressive is the amphitheater and the bathing complex. They bear testimony to the fact that the ancients were equally capable of planning and construction without the aid of modern technology. But you need to see it to believe it. When in Cyprus, head to Salamis.
The distance from Nicosia city center to Salamis ancient city is 68 km. The public bus and private cars will take about 1 hour 20 minutes to reach you there.
