W is for War and Water and Wine
What's the next best to water? Wine? Definitely not war but strangely a 700-year-old castle built strategically for war went on to gain a reputation for making the best dessert wine, aptly named 'Commandaria' from its phonetic origin, 'La Grande Commanderie'. In fact, that was the name of the military headquarters of the Knights Templar and Knights Hospitallers, the renowned knightly orders that occupied Cyprus during the time of the Crusades with their base at Kolossi Castle. There are beautiful views from the top. The nearby Curium beach has historic sites too. It is here, at this castle, built-in 1210 that King Richard the Lionheart married a Spanish princess and celebrated his conquest of Cyprus by tasting this wine and calling it the 'King of Wines'. Today, it is the oldest wine in the world. Would your spirit rest without having a sip of it? Sometimes, wars can win hearts and a smile...with a little bit of intoxicating wine.
The distance from Nicosia city center to this castle is 96.1 km. The bus will reach you there in 2 hours. One way ticket price starts at 5.34 EUR. Private cars will take you there in 1 hour 10 minutes with rentals starting from 10 EUR.
