About Easter Island/Moui

A visit to Easter island is on just about everyone's bucket list. This remote island, natively known as Rapa Nui, was annexed by Chile in 1888. Chile is 3,152 kms (2,182 miles) away. It is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, with mere 7,750 inhabitants. 

The island is most famous for the moai, 900 carved stone heads said to have been created during the 13th to 16th centuries.The largest is Ahu Tongariki they are must-see atleast once in your life.They aren't the only thing to see and do on Easter Island.Walk along the volcanic craters, sun yourself on the beach ,and go diving off the coast near ancient stone villages.


Most of the island is now protected in Rapa Nui National Park.Easter Island was named as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995.

How to reach

The only way to reach Easter Island is via LAN Airlines which flies daily to Easter Island from Santiago, Chile.

Just remember you need an extra 6-hour flight to whatever time it takes you to reach the Chilean capital, Santiago. 

Tips

  • Please remember as it takes about 6 hrs to reach Easter Island from Santiago, Chile which takes your entire day so plan your trip accordingly.
  • You can easily rent a car, a scooter, a quad bike, etc which will help you save some money.
  • Try to start your day as early as possible to beat the crowd and heat.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Keep some time so that you can shop around, check for some local food, etc
  • Do not miss The Kari Kari show with some great lights and music for your evening entertainment.
  • Best time to visit is during the annual Tapati Rapa Nua festival held in the first two weeks of February. 
  • Keep your tickets very safe, because if you lose them, you'll have to go back to Hanga Roa and buy them again.
