Most of the coastline of Easter Island is rocky. Anakena Beach is only one of two sandy beaches. When you’ve finished marvelling at the moai stone heads and Orongo Ceremonial Village, be sure to head here to squish the white sand between your toes.
Anakena is known for a few reasons. Ahu Ature Huki and Ahu Nao-Nao are both here; two monuments restored in 1954. Ahu Ature has just one moai while Nao-Nao has seven. It was the ceremonial centre for the reading of the Rongorongo boards. And, if you were a chief from one of the western tribes and won the bird-man competition, you would finish by celebrating at Anakena.
If legends are correct, Anakena was also where Hotu Matu-a first landed and settled on Rapa Nui.
