Don’t forget, the ski season in Chile runs contrary to that of North America. Experience Portillo in the Andes Mountains from June to October.
Portillo has been owned and operated by the Purcell family for over 60 years. The hotel is at 2,880 m (9,450 ft) above sea level, but the highest lift will take you to 3,310 m (10,860 ft). Catch your breath before heading down the slopes of some of the highest peaks in the western and southern hemispheres. Unless you plan to ski the Himalayas, adrenaline junkies will be satisfied. The lowest lift has a vertical drop of 762 m (2,500 ft). You’ll have days of fun whooshing down the manicured snow on 35 runs.
Nothing can stop a dedicated skier, and nothing stopped the Portillo from hosting the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1966, even after being partially destroyed by avalanches the year before. Don’t shelve your dreams of becoming an Olympic skier. Train here during the summer while the sun is high at home.
Take a flight from Santiago, then you can take shuttles, private transport, or even contact car-rental companies if you are planning to drive yourself. If you’re on a Chile multi-resort ski tour, all your transport requirements will be looked after.
