Popularly known as the ‘Capital of Southern Chile’, Concepcion is the second largest city of Chile. The University of Concepcion is just another place to visit among many other tourist attractions. The university is dedicated to the development of international observatories in Chile, since its inception in 1919. Ronald Mennickent was the first astronomer to be hired by the university. A Concepcion native, he went on to get his PhD at a Chilean institution. By 2007, the Astronomy department was independent and started its undergraduate program. Alternatively, Concepcion is a hub of entertainment with many beaches, sports and outdoor activities and of course abundance of local markets and restaurants. All the attractions are easily accessible by modern public and private transport.
• The House of Art as the name suggests, holds the second-largest collection of art in the capital. The exterior may look mundane, however, the interior is contrastingly interesting with over 2000 pieces of art
• Get some hands-on history lessons on the infamous boat ‘Huascar’ used in the Battle of Iquique’ to sink Esmeralda
• Set out on your little expedition in the Concepcion zoo. Don’t be surprised if you spot some unexpected animals like zebras, giraffes, tigers and many more
• On top of a bluff overlooking the rocky and rugged coast and beaches are the Parque and Museum. Though not centrally located, this museum dedicated to the life of Pedro del Rio Zanartu is worth a visit
• If interested in history but not willing to travel far, the Natural History Museum of Conception is a good option. You can find some interesting display from animals to fossils to carvings
• Get a taste of Chilean wilderness in the Nonguen National Reserve. Located on the outskirts, it is a perfect place if you are looking for some peace and quiet
• A leisurely walk beginning at Parque Ecuador and culminating up the Caracol Hill gives you a different perspective of Concepcion
• The coastal extension of Concepcion is a tourist hotspot for its peaceful surroundings and several great restaurants
• Mercado do Gran Concepcion is a local market with a unique blend of modernity and cleanliness. Take home some fresh and local produce

• Do not carry expensive jewellery or other valuables while on the streets on Concepcion
• Keep the visiting card of the hotel or any place you are staying in handy. Carry a local map at all times
• If travelling away from the city, it is better to have a first-aid kit handy. Also, carry a list of medicines you may need with their names in Spanish
