About Austral Road

Carretera Austral Road is the highway that runs 1,240 kilometers south of Chile. It is named as Chile’s Route 7 and runs from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins. This highway was built to link over 35 towns in the region that were connected by water earlier. Both sides of  Austral Road is still very primitive and wild. It is well known for road trips among travelers around the world. While on the Austral Road trip you can enjoy the natural ambiance of several rivers, mountains, volcanoes, hanging glaciers, and many more most implausible landscapes on the earth.

Austral Road is the only path connecting Puerto Montt and the most remote areas of Northern Patagonia. It is the least populated area in Chile with an average of one person per square kilometer. Those who are interested in adventurous road trips can rent a car from Puerto Montt and drive till Villa O’Higgins, through Chaiten, Puyuhuapi, Coyhaique, Puerto Rio Tranquilo, and Cochrane. Travelers have to use three ferry services to drive the entire route. A forty minute ferry crossing is required between Fishing Creeks La Arena and Puelche, a five hour crossing from Hornopiren to Caleta Gonzalo, and a fifty minute ferry crossing from Puerto Yungay to Rio Bravo.

Travelers can arrange their night stay in a camping tent, camper van, or stay in a hotel. There are numerous camping grounds available along the way and it is the best option to save money. If you are looking for a comfortable stay, better to hire a hotel room. You can find cheap homestays near the main towns.
