Explore the 80 square miles of the Fundy National Park of Canada, located along Goose Bay, a branch of the Bay of Fundy, in New Brunswick.
The park has 100 km of hiking trails, including the Caribou Plains Trail and boardwalk where you can wander the upland forests and bogs. For a more vacation-y trip the park has a golf course, a heated saltwater pool where you can float without swimming, and three campgrounds waiting for you. In winter months go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and tobogganing. Imagine seeing any of the 25 waterfalls with icy formations!
Fundy National Park is perhaps best known for the Hopewell Rocks, rock formations that have eroded with the powerful tides over thousands of years. The trees and plants growing on top make the rock formations look like “flower pots”.
The highest tides in the world happen here. Watch and plan around the tide schedules. When the tide is in, the ocean floor disappears under 50 feet of water. Stand back at a safe distance and watch the tide roll in at 6 to 8 vertical feet per hour, or up to 12 vertical feet per hour in the spring. The speed of the tides whirls around the silt and makes the water a brown chocolate color. When the tide is out, walk the ocean floor in your favorite water shoes, to find sea creatures, shells, and rocks you wouldn’t ordinarily see firsthand. Look out across the water for sightings of any of the 12 species of whales that make the Bay of Fundy home.
If you love the water, Fundy National Park is a must-see.
