Koh Ker is a small village in Northern Cambodia, which was formerly the capital of the Khmer region from 928 to 944 AD. The village is located 110 kilometres north-east to Siem Reap, which is known as the gateway of the ruins of Angkor. The complex is a collection of several temples situated on Chhork Koki highland. The remarkable one is the ruin of Koh Ker Temple, which was built between 928 to 944 AD by the then King Jayavarman IV. Koh Ker Temple is 35-metres high and faces towards Angkor City. As per the history, King Jayavarman IV established the temple in the name of 'Treypuvanesvara', who was believed to be the god of happiness.
Till now, about 100 temples have been discovered in this remote archaeological site. Until now, the site is untouched by mass tourism and the Cambodian government is prepping up to develop it as a tourist attraction. The main attraction is the Koh Ker temple, which looks like a small hill from distance, as it is covered by forest. The temple has seven levels and to the top, there is a 55-step staircase. Once reaching the top of the temple, visitors can get a spectacular view of the surroundings, in particular, of the Kulen district. A significant archaeological site, the location has over 180 sanctuaries of which only a couple of dozens are allowed for visitors while the rest are either hidden amidst forests or haven’t been fully demined yet. Interestingly, in spite of the remoteness of Koh Ker, it has been looted many times. The sculptures of the region aren’t only found in many museums but also in several private collections. They are also at times offered at elite auctions.
