About Groeningemuseum

'Groningen Museum' is located in 'Greoninge District', roughly in the centre of the city of Bruges, Belgium. It is also known as 'The Fine Arts Museum of Bruges', and is presently situated at the former location of 'Eekhouth Abbey'. It is internationally famous for having a huge collection of 'Early Netherlandish', also called 'Flemish Primitives', masterpieces.

The museum was designed by 'Joseph Vierin', and by 1930 it put many of the paintings in Bruges under one roof. These world-renowned paintings were previously scattered throughout the city. It was quite fortunate that the museum had kind neighbours, and the neo-gothic building beside it offered extra space to the museum in 1995. The museum building underwent renovation in 2002, and parts of it were refurbished in later years. Today it is a popular tourist destination, as well as place housing immense historic importance.

Throughout its 11 rooms, Groeninge Museum presents a collection of artwork ranging over six centuries. It covers the artwork from areas which are now part of Belgium, previously known as 'South Netherlands'. This museum is one of the three museums that have collaborated to jointly present the 'Flemish Art' in the Flemish region of Belgium called, 'Flanders'. The management has set up the museum's collections in chronological order. This helps one get a better feel of the progression of artwork as they tour the museum. The museum contains well-known works of art, including the ones by 'Jan van Eyck', 'Gerard David', 'Hans Memling', 'Hugo van der Goes', and many other famous artists. Works from the 18th and 19th Centuries are quite popular too, which cover the neoclassical time as well as the realist period. It also gives its visitors a chance to observe the wonders of 'Belgian Expressionism' and the post-World War II modern art.

The museum is located slightly away from the crowded city area, for you to peacefully enjoy the centuries-old masterpieces that it presents. It is an excellent place to get to know the Belgian culture and its history. It is a splendid experience for art lovers; those who tend to sit and observe paintings for long times. Although the staff is quite friendly and knowledgeable and will answer any questions you have, its best to read up about the artwork before visiting. So you can get a better feel of what you are looking at.
