Well known for being the only Gulf state where one can legally buy alcohol, Bahrain is, also more liberal than most of its neighbours.
The capital, Manama, which in Arabic ironically means "the place of rest" or "the place of dreams", gets going after dark, with late night shopping, lively bars and nightclubs, as well as countless restaurants offering fine dining and the chance for a local drink.
Modern cafes can also be found throughout the city, however, one must be well aware that most 'coffee shops' are bars, and are intended for men only.
