Also known as Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, The Lighthouse At The End Of The World, is one of the several fantastic places to see in Argentina. It was built in 1918 and is the first lighthouse on the southern waters of the country. This iconic structure represented the entrance to the southern region of Argentina. Built on an island in Beagle Channel, Its actual purpose was to provide navigational aid for vessels traveling in the Ushuaia area.
The Lighthouse At The End Of The World is a brick tower constructed in the shape of a cone. The tower is painted in red and white strips for easy identification. You can hire a boat to have a close look at the structure and to take some amazing photos of this historic icon. On the way, you can witness birds and sea lions in the neighboring islands. It is the most common destination for sailing trips. Steamer ducks, black eyebrow albatrosses, and Magellan goose are spotted here regularly. The lighthouse is about 11 meters high and has a base width of 3 meters. The tower is located on a small rocky island with snowcapped Patagonian mountains in the background.
Visitors can see the structure from outside and can take photos. The tower's interiors are not open to the public yet. It works on solar power and the navigation light at the top flashes once every 10 seconds. The beacon light is visible from a distance of 14 kilometers.
The lighthouse is located 5 nautical miles to the East of Ushuaia in the Beagle Channel. A 45 minute travel in a catamaran is required to reach the spot from Ushuaia
