Established in 1958, the museum of Apollonia is situated 8km west of Fier, Albania. Also known as Fier Archaeological museum, it is located in the converted monastery of Saint Mary. The museum houses some of the impressive collections that were excavated at Apollonia. Containing archaeological materials from both before and after the Second World War, the museum was a popular tourist attraction during the communist regime. The museum showcases different aspects of the city; from its beginning to its relations with political organizations, trade, culture, education and many more. Get a peek of the city’s rich 100-year history.
Some of the important artefacts had to be moved in the 1990’s due to thefts and disturbed political situations. The museum was then closed for security reasons. Later restored with the help of MDG-fund, the museum was re-opened for public in December 2011. This is expected to increase the appeal of the place for the tourists.
