The ruins of Panama Viejo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the main national symbols of Panama. The site is also one major tourist spot in Panama City. It is filled with locals and tourists throughout the year. If you like pirate stories, the history of this location will interest you. The original Panamá Viejo was abandoned after a devastating attack by a pirate army in early 1600. Today, you can explore its battered remains, including the old cathedral, walls, and several stone buildings. The site is still being excavated and numerous archaeological ruins have been found that are displayed at the on-site museum.
