Ah Timgad, the Roman city in Algeria. Originally populated by Roman veterans, the city expanded to a population of over 10,000 Romans, Africans, and those of Berber descent. This city represents the best examples of the grid plan in Roman city planning.
Within the city are the Great Baths of the North, Trajan’s Arch, and a public library. The Great Baths of the North were designed symmetrically, complete with latrines and saunas on either side and the baths at the back. Trajan’s Arch is the most elegant structure in the city with three arch piles. The central arch is the tallest and widest of the three and was built for the chariots arriving and departing the city, and the smaller, shorter arches on either side built for pedestrians.
The museum is one of only two known Roman public libraries in the world. It is estimated that it once contained over 3,000 scrolls. The museum was rebuilt during the 1930s and now holds over 86 mosaics of various sizes.
