About Agora

The Agora of Smyrna is one of the world’s best conserved ancient agoras. This can be attributed to the mesmeric open-air museum on site. Built by Alexander the Great and later rebuilt following an earthquake, the still-standing columns, archways and structures offer a glimpse into what a Roman bazaar must have looked like. After being devastated by an earthquake in 178 AD, ancient Agora was rebuilt by Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. The Faustina Gate and Corinthian arcade are the major site attractions. The basements of the two basilicas remains a center of attraction for tourists, which ignites the imagination wondering how this multi leveled rectangular marketplace would have looked ages ago ! There was also a Muslim cemetery built on the site and the tombstones still remain there – which are a treasure trove of historical stories and anecdotes.
